Canidates for the Baroncy of Darkwater

Meet your candidates

Sir Iohannis Mac Suibhne and HL Meadb O’Connell

1.  What, if anything, do you hope to do to expand the artistic presence and involvement of Darkwater?

While encouraging people to learn the artistic aspect of the SCA, we also want to show our pride for Darkwater by having different pieces that may be made by our artisans either shown at events that we attend, or by being given out as presents. We fully feel that the most important part of this is finding a space to be able to do these things, teaching art-sci classes, and fun events for the betterment of our barony.

2.  What, if anything, would you do to foster unity, solidarity and a feeling of inclusiveness in the barony, especially between those who attend meetings and those who attend fighter practice?

Given that we both are a part of the fighting community as well as being active on other fronts representing the barony with pride, we feel that we have and will continue to encourage unity amongst all. We encourage everyone to understand that we all belong and should participate in baronial activities as well as representing our barony on a Kingdom level.

3.  What would you do to encourage longevity in our members?

Make sure that everyone belongs. This is their home, and we want them to all feel that way. While everything may not be 100% all of the time, we feel that there is grounds for us all to grow and learn. Without having that input how can anyone strive to progress?

4.  Describe how the Baron and Baroness fit within the Baronial Officer structure.

The Baron and Baroness are figureheads of the officers decision. While they have a singular vote, they need to be able to represent that decision, even if they do not agree with it. They are to show proactiveness and represent their barony with a smile and pride.

5.  What are the duties of the Baron & Baroness?

They serve the Barony at the behest of the Crown, representing the populace of the Barony by recognizing and celebrating the achievements of its members. They should be lifting people up and showing the known world how amazing our populace is. Doing this means attending court and various meetings. Growing and learning to represent better and having a presence that encourages others to also grow.

6.  How would you, as Baron/Baroness, deal with interpersonal issues between members of the Barony?

First and foremost, we could hope that using traditional conflict resolution methods would work in making a path that moves forward. If not, then it would be our duty to do what is in the best interest of the Barony. Mediation may be a useful tool, but above all, not taking sides and trying to de-escalate the situation is the most important.

7.  Where do you see the Barony in 4 years?

In Central Florida…..lol. Seriously, we would love to see our art-sci community grow to be the top of the Kingdom. Stronger membership unity, more active meetings, both business and populace and  higher member involvement.

8.  What do you see as the role of the Cantons in the running of the Barony and vice versa?

The Cantons help provide a feeling of belonging for members that cannot as easily make it to regular baronial activities. While right now, we are trying to find space for meetings and classes, so it is a bit difficult. The Barony helps the Cantons by giving them the populace and support for groups, activities, funding, and representation.

9.  Would you travel to the various Cantons?

Yes, and we do as regularly as possible.

10.  Would you encourage the Cantons to either sponsor the traditional Baronial events or create (or resurrect) their own?

Yes to both. We do feel like the active Canton is geared towards creating their own traditions, we will continue to encourage them to sponsor traditional Baronial or Kingdom events.

11.  What suggestions would you give to the Canton Seneschals to help their groups grow?

Right now there is only one active Canton, the Canton of Loch Gryffyn. And quite honestly, they are doing very well with growing their group by going to events and demos.

12.  Why do you want to be Baron and Baroness?

We want to encourage all of our members and potential newcomers to see the greatness that Darkwater is. We feel that we have the “bridge” between the different groupings, and with that knowledge and the insight from past Barons and Baronesses of Darkwater, can unite and evolve the Barony into something that many have desired to see it grow into.

13.  What positions have you held in the SCA?

Sir Iohannis Mac Suibhne - Seneschal of the Canton of Loch Gryffyn, Marshal of the Canton of Loch Gryffyn, Marshal of Darkwater, Chatelaine of the Shire of Dragon’s Chase and Marshal of the Shire of Dragon’s Chase, and currently the Authorization Deputy for the Kingdom Earl Marshal.

HL Meadb O’Connell - Seneschal of the Shire of Dragon’s Chase and the Marshal of the Shire of Dragon’s Chase.

14.  If you are not chosen as Baron & Baroness, do you see yourself staying active in Darkwater and supporting the barony?

Of course, you all couldn’t fight us away with cannons. We will proudly help whoever is chosen. It takes a community and a community is who we are, chosen or not.

15.  How long have you been actively playing in Darkwater?

We have both played in Darkwater as long as we have joined the SCA. 11 years and 5 years.

16.  Is there anything specifically you would like to add?

This is a big decision and not to be taken lightly. While we actively want to be chosen to represent this Barony, we ultimately want what is best for it. We feel that we have the personality and franchise to make Darkwater shine. A great mix of serious and get things done attitude, without being presumptuous or dismissive. We dabble in all things combined and feel at home in any situation. We would be proud to represent this Barony for the next 4 years as Baron and Baroness, if luckily chosen.

We also want to add that if we are chosen, we would like everyone to know that we have an open door policy. Please come to us with any issues, with any suggestions, and with words of wisdom. Support your neighbor in what they want to do and help us to celebrate the accomplishments of the populace of Darkwater.

The Baron and Baroness of Darkwater cannot represent its populace if they don’t listen to it. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to run as candidates.

Lady Idonea di Tigri and Lady Enid Hunter

1. What, if anything, do you hope to do to expand Darkwater's artistic presence and involvement?

We're eager to tap into the hidden treasures in storage, breathing new life into forgotten relics. Hosting workdays presents an exciting opportunity to craft fresh items for our Barony, infusing them with creativity and vibrancy. Exploring the possibility of rotating scribal days and fighter practices across the Barony is another endeavor we're keen to pursue, fostering inclusivity and community engagement in every corner of our realm.

2. What, if anything, would you do to foster unity, solidarity, and a feeling of inclusiveness in the barony, especially between those who attend meetings and those who attend fighter practice?

We propose adopting Loch Gryffyn's innovative model to enrich our fighter practices, fostering camaraderie and skill development. Concurrently, we aim to organize vibrant gatherings beyond formal events, uniting our Barony in the spirit of our annual White Elephant Exchange. We are also dedicated to fostering a sense of ownership among members by aiding individuals in finding their niche. These initiatives strengthen our community bonds and propel us toward a brighter future.

3. What would you do to encourage longevity in our members?

We propose a multifaceted approach to strengthen community bonds and enhance individual engagement within the Barony. This includes reaching out to members to tailor future gatherings, seeking suggestions for improvements, and offering training opportunities for those interested in taking on more active roles. We aim to foster ownership and shape our collective future in the post-pandemic world through these efforts.

4. Describe how the Baroness and Baroness fit within the Baronial Officer structure.

The Coronets' role within the SCA framework is somewhat ambiguous. While providing guidance and support to each office, the Coronets differ from whom the officer ultimately answers. With only one vote on the financial committee and in determining quorum, our ideas carry no more weight than any other member of the barony. However, serving as the barony's social leaders, the Coronets are responsible for exemplifying the ideals we aspire for our community, conveying the will of the Crown to the populace and the will of the populace to the Crown.

5. What are the duties of the Baroness & Baroness?

The Coronets serve as the bridge between Their Royal Majesties and the barony, representing both entities to each other. The role encompasses offering direction and vision for the future, encouraging the populace, and enthusiastically cheering for our champions while still making every voice feel heard. Our actions aim to inspire and unite our community, fostering a sense of pride and camaraderie within our ranks.

6. How would you, as Baron/Baroness, deal with interpersonal issues between members of the Barony?

The Coronets are not trained counselors, but we are genuine friends to all who enter our lands. We would ensure that everyone feels heard when they bring their concerns to us. We are here to lend a supportive ear and assist in uncovering the root of an issue, making the process as smooth as possible. Ultimately, our goal is to find a solution that satisfies everyone involved.

7. Where do you see the Barony in 4 years?

Our lives, mundane and medieval, have changed drastically in the last four years. The next four years will be about finding the new normal after COVID. This means innovation, listening to ideas, and encouraging action. It also means analyzing our structure and reevaluating it. In four years, the barony will have a more active membership, a more visible presence, and a more cohesive community. This journey of growth and resilience begins now, with each of us playing a vital role in shaping the future.

8. What do you see as the role of the Cantons in the running of the Barony and vice versa?

The cantons are not just separate entities but integral members of our extended family within the barony. While each Canton operates with its own distinct leadership structure and community dynamics, their presence enriches and strengthens our collective bond. Despite their autonomy, they remain deeply intertwined with the larger fabric of the barony, contributing to its diversity, vibrancy, and leadership. As fellow community members, we cherish and value each Canton's unique contributions and perspectives, fostering a sense of unity and solidarity across our vast lands.

9. Would you travel to the various Cantons?

We are committed to reaching every corner of the Barony, ensuring no community feels overlooked. From bustling city streets to tranquil countryside hamlets, we'll engage with every member, listening to their needs and aspirations. We aim to be accessible leaders ready to support and advocate for all.

10. Would you encourage the Cantons to either sponsor the traditional Baronial events or create (or resurrect) their own?

We wholeheartedly endorse and encourage the Cantons to take the lead in organizing baronial events or even independent gatherings according to their comfort and capacity. Empowering the Cantons to host such occasions not only fosters a sense of ownership and autonomy within each community but also strengthens the overall cohesion and vitality of our Barony. By extending our support and resources to facilitate these endeavors, we create opportunities for the Cantons to showcase their unique identities, talents, and traditions. Moreover, such collaborative efforts deepen friendship and camaraderie among the Cantons and the larger baronial populace, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and shared celebration.

11. What suggestions would you give to the Canton Seneschals to help their groups grow?

Each Canton boasts its own distinct culture and approach to serving its people. When extending our assistance, the initial step is to inquire about their required support. Recognizing that the Canton Seneschal holds the reins of leadership within their respective Canton is essential. Our role lies in providing support, resources, and a visible presence, aligning with their needs and aspirations as they navigate the path forward.

12. Why do you want to be Baroness and Baroness?

Drawing inspiration from the insights shared by past Coronets, we are determined to honor and build upon their legacies. Darkwater has provided us with a home and a family, offering solace and support during times of need. Now, it's our turn to repay that kindness by giving back to the community that has embraced us so warmly. We are committed to dedicating ourselves to the betterment of Darkwater, ensuring it continues thriving as a beacon of camaraderie, inclusivity, and shared purpose.

13. What positions have you held in the SCA?

Since 2015, Lady Enid has been actively engaged in the SCA community, becoming a member of the Barony of Darkwater in 2019. Before her involvement with our Society, she held leadership roles in similar organizations, gaining experience in event management and serving as presiding nobility. She has also notably served as a Deputy Seneschal, a Deputy Chronicler, and a Chatelaine. Lady Idonea brings nearly two decades of active SCA involvement, beginning as a recognized Page in Atlantia during childhood. Her extensive experience includes event stewardship across multiple kingdoms and serving in various leadership roles such as Chronicler, Seneschal, and Arts and Sciences officer.

14. If you are not chosen as Baroness & Baroness, do you see yourself staying active in Darkwater and supporting the barony?

Regardless of the outcome, we are fully committed to supporting the Barony in any capacity we can offer and would love the opportunity to serve under Honorable Lady Meadb and Sir Iohannis. Our dedication to the Barony remains unwavering, and we will continue to serve diligently as officers and event staff. Our goal is to contribute to the success and cohesion of the Barony, ensuring that it continues to thrive and flourish under the leadership of the new Coronets.

15. How long have you been actively playing in Darkwater?

Lady Enid has been active in Darkwater since moving to Orlando in 2019. She originally joined the SCA in 2016 in the Shire of Sangre de Sol. Lady Idonea is a second-generation SCAdian who has been in the SCA to varying degrees most of her life, with her first service recognition in 2003.
